How to Get Rid of a Beehive
Getting rid of a beehive can be a very important task to you, especially if you have children in your home. There are really only a few methods to choose from, and the truth is none of them are really completely safe. Many people have been seriously hurt, and some even killed when trying to remove a beehive from an area. Most of these hives will have bees in numbers of close to 10,000 or more, so you can imagine why this is such a dangerous thing to do. Many people mistake the size of these hives because only part of it is visible, often times these hives are built deep into walls or trees. Of course the first thing you need to do before deciding what method you will be using to get rid of the beehive, is to find out what type of bees are living inside of the hive and also the size of the hive.
Yellow Jackets
If you concluded that the type of bee living inside of the hive is a yellow jacket, you will want to use extreme caution. These types of bees are very aggressive and are territorial. If they think that the hive or themselves are being threatened in any way, they will attack. With these types of bees, your best course is to play it safe and call in a professional exterminator to get rid of the beehive. Calling a professional is also a good choice if the hive is large.
Honey Bees
If the bee that dwells inside the hive is a honeybee, then calling a local beekeeper might be the best thing to do. Honeybees are coming harder and harder to find, and most beekeepers will relocate the bees for no charge at all.
Smaller Hives – Spraying With Insecticide
If the hive is small and you think you can do it yourself safely, then be sure to take all the precautions when trying to rid yourself of the hive. Make sure to wear clothing that covers up all of your skin: long socks, shoes, long sleeves and any other clothing that you think would be appropriate to wear. When going to spray the hive with insecticide make sure you do it in the evening close to nighttime, bees are less active during the night and they are all more likely to be in the hive.
Be Proactive
One of the best methods to use to keep beehives from being a problem for you is not to let them nest near your home. Keep a watchful eye out for any bees, and make sure none of them are making nests near your home. If you keep an eye out, you can remove the hives easier because you will catch them before they are too big for you to handle.
Removing beehives is no walk in the park; it can be very dangerous. It is recommended that you be very cautious and if you don’t think you can handle it, call a professional. It may be more expensive, but it’s a lot safer for you.
