How to Get Rid of a Credit Card

visa credit cardMany people, especially young people fresh out of high school, fall into a trap and start putting themselves in debt with credit cards. This happens to many people, and once you are approved for one card and you max it out, you are off searching for another card to be approved for. It’s an ongoing cycle and it could lead to a lot of trouble. The best thing for you to do is to just get rid of your credit cards once and for all. How can you go about getting rid of your credit cards you ask? Well here are a few ways you can:

For a Rainy Day

If you can bring yourself together, and you think you can be responsible enough, then the best way to get rid of your credit cards is just to hide them from yourself for a rainy day. Sometimes emergencies will arise where you will need extra cash, and if you completely get rid of your card, it could leave you in a bad situation. So if you think you can keep it hidden from yourself without feeling the need to use it, then this method would be recommended.

Spouse or Family Help

If the first method won’t work for you and you don’t think you can handle the situation, then maybe someone in between you and your credit card will be the best answer. Give your credit card to a spouse or family member that you can trust with it, and tell them only to give it to you if it’s a real emergency. This still allows you to have your credit card for emergencies, but out of your immediate reach so you can’t go and buy stuff that you don’t need with it.

Destroy!

If the first two methods don’t work for you then you will have to settle for the worst-case scenario method. You will need to destroy your credit card to get rid of it, cut them up, burn them, do whatever you have to do to completely get rid of them.

Stay Away

Once you get rid of your credit card or cards, the next thing you need to do is to stay away from them. Once you are free, don’t ever let yourself fall back into that mess again. Open a savings account, start saving money, and then when you really think you need to buy something you will have extra cash to buy it with.

The only real good thing about credit cards is that they do help you establish credit. After you have established credit, you really have no need for credit cards anymore. They will only cause you headache. So the best thing for you to do is to just get rid of them.

  1. This is not good advice. Here is better advice. Just be more responsible. Pay off the cards, and then stop charging more then you can afford. It’s simple. Pay off your statement balance every month. If you do this with a rewards card, you can earn a lot of free stuff. The best deals are travel cards, that let you earn free airplane tickets and hotel stays. Credit cards do not cause me headache. Points earned from credit cards, when combined with points earned from other activities and bonuses add up to a lot of nice free plane tickets. Plus they have other perks. If you have a good credit card, you don’t need to pay for rental car insurance or travel insurance. The Delta Skymiles card lets you not pay checked luggage fees. So if you are a family of 4 who takes only one trip per year, that is a savings of $200 in luggage fees every year.
