How to Get Rid of a Dry Cough
Coughs are generally of two types dry or ones that produce phlegm or mucus. A dry cough can be painful and is typically caused by smoking, pollution, asthma or from a foreign matter that gets trapped in the esophagus. A dry cough can be very annoying and bothersome, but there are several ways to get rid of a dry cough.
Drink Fluids
One of the best ways to stop a dry cough is to drink plenty of fluids especially water. Drinking liquids will keep the body hydrated and will help alleviate a dry cough. Also drinking a cup of warm tea is a good remedy for a dry cough. Lemon and honey can be added to the tea. The honey will coat the throat and help ease irritation and will help stop coughing. Ginger and herbals treats are best but regular tea also works well.
Suppressants
Cough medicines with suppressants are also helpful. Suppressants should only be used for dry coughs and should not be used for chronic coughs or coughs that contain mucus. Do not use expectorants because they are designed to make a person cough.
Lozenges
Lozenges are also helpful, they help coat the throat and will help minimize coughing. Peppermint candy also works as a lozenge and will soothe the throat and help prevent hacking.
Natural Remedies
Hot milk and honey can help get rid of a dry cough as well. Add one teaspoon of honey to a glass of hot milk and drink it slowly. The warm milk and honey is best if it is drunk before bedtime because warm milk is relaxing.
Swallowing a teaspoon of honey at least two times a day will coat the throat and keep it from being too dry.
Apple cider vinegar added to a glass of water is also helpful when trying to stop a dry cough. A few teaspoons added to a glass of water is all that is needed. Vinegar reduces inflammation in the throat and in the chest which helps prevent coughing.
Use a Humidifier
A humidifier placed in the bedroom is also a good way to get rid of a dry cough. A humidifier is best when used at night. It will keep the air moist and will help keep air passageways from drying out overnight.
Conclusion
A dry cough is annoying and most times it is not serious and these and other remedies will help get rid of a dry cough, but if the cough is persistent and lasts for more than a few weeks it could be a sign of something more serious and a doctor should be consulted.
