How to Get Rid of a Jammed Finger
Sometimes we jam one of our fingers or even our thumb without even remembering how it happened or the finger jammed, we were momentarily shocked by the pain and then forgot about it until the hurt ligaments and muscles that got jammed cooled off and the throbbing began. Since we use our fingers all of the time, living with a jammed finger is a constant painful situation that needs to be handled at once. Here are four ways of trying to heal a jammed finger before going to visit a doctor in sports medicine.
Put off using the hand with the jammed finger
As awkward as it is to try and button a shirt or tie your shoes without using both hands, try as best you can to keep from using the jammed finger until it heals. If there is swelling where the jammed finger and the hand join, use an ice pack to reduce the inflammation.

Jerk the jammed finger with the opposing hand
Similar to chiropractic treatments that snap your spinal column back into adjustment, simply pull quickly on the jammed finger until you hear a pop or it has gone back into alignment. If you feel a momentary pain, it will quickly subside as the joint has popped back into place. Following through with gentle massage and flexing your entire hand with the jammed finger into a fist and then relaxing the hand will make your finger heal faster. Taking a pain reliever like aspirin while the finger heals, helps you to continue to exercise the hand with the jammed finger.
Use a therapeutic arthritis rub on the jammed finger
If the muscle and ligaments around a jammed finger feel warm to the touch in one spot, rub on an over the counter arthritic creme. The heat generated by the creme soothes the sprained muscle and the pain may subside faster than just waiting for it to heal by itself.
Soak your hand in warm water and use Epsom salts or Aveda soaking powder or hand treatment
There is no reason to try and endure the pain without making some effort to deal with it. Fill a pan with warm water and mix in Epsom salt or Aveda Hand Relief treatment. Trying to soothe the injured finger means reaching in to the muscles that have been pulled out of alignment. This soothing hand bath can follow the second treatment of pulling on the finger until it pops followed by soothing the sore muscles to ease the pain.

I’m a big fan of using Epsom salts. There is some kind of magical quality to them. I would also recommend using paraffin wax treatments. The portable spas a re pretty cheap, and it works fantastically. I have yet to try the Aveda product, but will add it to the repertoire.
