How to Get Rid of Alcoholism

bartender alcoholAs many of us know, having a few cocktails and/or beers from time to time and on special occasions seems pretty harmless. The truth is that this kind of behavior can become reckless and lead to serious problems. The good news is that if you are addicted to alcohol there are ways to get help and not have alcohol run your life any longer. It is a process that is day to day and it does not happen overnight. Keep your head up. You can get through this and you must surround yourself with people that want to see you succeed. This way you do not fall off the wagon, you will be the one driving the wagon to a better place in no time.

Getting Away From Alcohol

The biggest problem with alcohol is that it is everywhere. You can not sit down in a restaurant without the waitress trying to upsell you with a few drinks. While this is tempting, it is not the time or place that an addict needs to encounter. Alcoholism is a disease and needs to be treated as such until that person is ready to make a change. I know that it is hard with all the pretty drinks with umbrellas in them and beer ads with their gorgeous counterparts. Alcohol does not make you smarter, richer or better looking. All it does is strip you of all your inhibitions.

Surround Yourself With Sober People

Now that you are ready to become alcohol free the key is to surround yourself with people who can soberly have a good time. Having parties that include apple cider and sparkling grape juice are a great way to start. It may sound a bit corny, but try putting these drinks in cool looking glasses to be served. Wine glasses and cocktail cups might make it easier for you to transition into a sober lifestyle. Also jazz up those glasses with a variety of garnishes. Cherries, limes, mint and even umbrellas can be used. Even water looks good with a cherry garnish and syrup.

At first this is going to be extremely difficult. I do not recommend going into a bar right away. No matter how strong you may think that you are, you may still have the thought that, “I will only have one.” That one may turn into too many and then you are right back at step one. No one says that you have to stay indoors all throughout your recovery. Get out and get a hobby. Take up photography or writing. Both are a good way to capture your creativity and keep tabs on how your recovery is going. Make sure your friends are around and do not be afraid to ask them to change plans so that you are comfortable with going out. This will help you realize that they are there to help you become yourself again.

With any addiction process you may become addicted to something else. This necessarily may not be anything like alcohol either. Be careful to keep all of your behaviors under control. Besides drinking, smoking and dating can become excessive. You may feel lonely and again should surround yourself with friends. Turning to such vices like these or even harder things should never be an option. Talking to close friends and family is a great way to keep these from entering your lifestyle.

Consult an Alcoholism Treatment Professional

Talking with health care professionals or even a support group are ways to help your addiction to be minimized. Having intimate discussions with those who know exactly where you are coming from is a very calming and eye opening experience. Someone who is in your shoes or has been there before can make you feel ten thousand times better. Their experiences become yours and vice versa. Counselors will make sure that you never want to take another drink and may provide you with a buddy that you can call should you want to. With any type of organized class, they will recognize when you have achieved sobriety. Then you can pass on what you have learned.

There is a Cure for Alcoholism

Alcoholism can be cured. You have to want it and fight for it. Sobriety is a great thing and you will feel great. Surround yourself with loved ones and friends to talk to. Make sure that when you go out that the venues are sober venues. Do not take this lying down. Get out there. Work and play within an environment that is suitable for you. Take classes on alcoholism and learn all that you can to make this work. Learning new ways to live may just be the one tool that not only saves your life, but kicks this addiction to the curb forever!
