There are many different conditions which can lead to problems with an irritated, itchy, and dry scalp. Many times more then not this is simply due to a condition known as scalp dandruff. But since scratching your scalp can actually pull up living skin other non-dandruff related issues can be commonly confused with dandruff.
So how can someone cure an itchy scalp?

Dandruff
Dandruff is a condition which causes a buildup of dead skin cells on top of the scalp. These skin cells tend to suffocate the living skin sitting underneath causing irritation and itching. Some causes of dandruff are stress, poor diet, and a fungus called malassezia. Some general ways of reducing dandruff to cure itching of the scalp are to watch your diet, make sure you are eating healthy and consuming all the proper proportions of vitamins which your body needs to function correctly. You should concentrate on keeping up on the vitamins A,E, and B which are vital in preventing dandruff. You should also work on your stress levels giving yourself free time to relax and handle the things which stress you out normally in your lifestyle.
Head Lice
Head Lice is a very common cause of itchy scalps. Although lice is most common in children who attend public school anyone can get head lice. Head lice are tiny insects which feed off of the blood veins in the scalp which causes the itching. Head lice are mildly difficult to get rid of and should be treated with proper medicated shampoos to kill the lice. Along with using the shampoo you should be regularly combing and removing any eggs or knits from within your hair and scalp to prevent the lice from returning. If neither of the above are the cause for your skin condition consider investing in an oil or shampoo which is created for the sole purpose of helping with miscellaneous itching of the scalp, your itching problem may be as simple as just having dry skin.
