How to Get Rid of Car Rust

Rust attacks vehicles on a daily basis. It is more prevalent in the northern areas where salt or salt products are used on the roads. Most vehicles today are coated with rust inhibitors. They are undercoated so water and salt cannot eat at the bare metal. The best solution to rust is to prevent it on your car. If rust occurs take care of it as soon as possible. Here is a few ways on how to get rid of car rust.

Prevent Rust and Prevent it From Spreading

To prevent rust you have to drive in a manner where your vehicle will never get scratched or dinged. Park so other vehicles will not ding your car when they open their doors. When you get a scratch or ding touch it up right away. If there is any rust at all remove it with a chemical or a wisk of sand paper. Touch the area up with matching touch up paint. Use a fine brush to fill in scratches with the new paint.

Use Phosphoric Acid

If you apply phosphoric acid to the rusted area it will turn the rust to a powder that will wipe off easily. Use rubber gloves when using any chemicals and eye protection is a must. Dab on phosphoric acid and let it react to the rust. After the reaction wipe off the powdery rust and touch up the area. Clean off well before you paint the area.

Navel Jelly

Navel jelly also has a chemical reaction with most rust. Put a small amount of navel jelly on rust spot and let react. Wipe the area free of rust and clean area properly. If it does not remove all rust the first time coat the area again and repeat the process. You may have to sand the spot lightly and remove all dust before painting. Use this on small spots or scratches being careful to keep the jelly in the main vicinity. Rinse area and make sure it is cleaned real well.

Sand, Grind, and Repair

In bad areas of rust it may be required to grind and sand the area. Some areas may need metal added to reform the car part. Some areas may be filled with a body filler or fibreglass patch. Make sure you remove all the rust before filling. This is how you get rid of car rust in advanced stages.

Whatever way you use to remove that pesky rust make sure you get it all before touching up. The best way to get rid of car rust is prevention.
