How to Get Rid of Engine Sludge
Engine sludge is not pretty, nor is it easy to get rid of. First thing you want to do is to take the timing belt cover off. If you’re sure you have sludge then move onwards. However, most will take a valve cover off and that is where you get to the bottom line. Now that you have seen that your engine has sludge. You will want to remove the heads of the engine and place them on a workbench.

Next, remove the cams and valve buckets and this will leave your valve springs exposed. Now is when you want to take out your cleaning supplies. You will want to have a very good cleaner. But the preference is left up to you. Now that you have your cleaning utensils ready, you will want to soak the heads and such in this cleaner and set it off to the side. The longer it soaks the more sludge you will get removed.
While your heads are off to the side soaking, you will want to grab your valve stem seals as well as your valve springs. Take an old toothbrush or something with a soft bristle head and begin to clean these. Take great care in how hard you scrub because you do not want to have to go replacing things. Use nice, gentle, even strokes and get as much of your oil sludge off of the pieces. Take your time, and wear your protective goggles so any backlash will not hit you in the face.
Now that you have the valve stem seals and valve springs cleaned, go take a look at your heads. If they still look full of sludge, change the cleaning bucket for fresh cleaning supplies. Soak them for a few hours more and then repeat. Once the sludge is most of the way gone, you can now begin piecing your engine back together again. The engine will always have some type of sludge build up, even if you do keep the oil changed regularly.
Now that you have your engine pieced back together, make sure you put a new oil filter in. Once you have the filter in place, slowly begin pouring your oil back in. Fill your car or truck up and make sure you write your mileage down so you know when you have to change your oil to stop the sludge from building back up.
