How to Get Rid of Ground Moles

Ridding your home and property of those pesky little ground moles can be a real challenge. Once ground moles also known as voles set up their home, they become very stubborn and refuse to leave no matter what you do to them. But, rest assured, there are ways to get these annoying creatures to go running for the hills.

Mole Traps

One of the most popular ways to get rid of ground moles is to use inexpensive mole traps that can be purchased as most garden supply stores. By using this humane and “green” method, you can catch the moles in a trap and release them back into the wild in a safer environment far from your home. If you do not want to purchase the traps, check with your local shelters and they will sometimes provide traps as well as come pick up the critters once they have been caught.

Eliminate Food

Although many believe that moles eat vegetation, this is just not so. Ground moles especially love feasting on grubs and earthworms. As long as these remain on your property, the moles will likely stay too.

You will need to treat your yard with either Milky spore or products containing the chemicals halofenozide or imidacloprid to eliminate the grubs.

Natural Mole Poison

Another way to send these critters packing is make up a homemade mixture of 1oz of castor oil, 1 cup of Murphy’s Oil Soap, and 1/4 cup cayenne pepper. Mix all of these together and pour into the tunnels and anywhere the moles have been seen traveling. It is best to use safety precautions while using this homemade poison by wearing gloves and goggles.

Many people are firm believers on the effectiveness of the above methods of getting rid of ground moles. There are indeed more options that can be considered such as scaring them away, flushing their tunnels with water, pesticides, and even common household pets but none of these methods prove to have a lasting effect. It is very important that once you do rid your home and yard of the moles, you take preventative measures to ensure that they do not return. A great way to do this is to build a deep barrier fence around the property and keep grubs and earthworms under control so the moles will have no reason to return. Using these tips, your yard can become beautiful once again.
