What are Killer Bees?

So-called killer bees, also referred to as Africanized bees, are a cross between domesticated European honey bees and African honey bees. African honey bees were originally introduced to South America in 1956 because they produced more honey than their European cousins. It turned out that they were also much more aggressive, and prone to relentlessly attacking any perceived threat to the hive. Over time, African bees bred with the European bees and spread into North American, where they have become a serious threat to the safety of those they encounter.

How Can I Get Rid of Killer Bees?

There is no way for anyone who is not a bee expert to identify whether a bee is a regular honey bee or a dreaded killer bee. It is better to be safe than sorry. If you suspect a bee colony has set up their hive near your home, assume they are killer bees and don’t take any chances.

Bees of any kind should be removed by a professional if at all possible. Bee keepers will often remove hives for free in order to relocate the bees and use them to pollinate crops. True Africanized bees might have to be killed rather than simply removed, but this decision should be made by a bee expert.

If you must kill the bees yourself, take precautions. Wear thick, loose-fitting clothing such as sweat pants and sweaters to protect yourself from the bees’ stingers. Wait until early morning or late evening, since bees are most active during the day. Use an insecticide that is labeled for killing bees, and follow the directions carefully. Take all precautions necessary to remain safe, because they are called killer bees for a reason.

If the bees have made their hive inside the siding of your home, seal all holes and seams to prevent their possible return.

Getting rid of killer bees can be dangerous. Use common sense, and call a professional if you feel threatened.
