So you painted your room with latex paint (good for you) but now it smells to high heaven and you can’t get rid of it? (The smell, that is.) Don’t despair, you can do it. You can take your choice of these three ways to get rid of it, or try all three.

Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar may not be well known for its odor absorbing qualities, but it works. It’s very simple to use: just put a couple of ounces in each of several shallow containers and set them around a room, close the door and forget about it for a day or so. It will get rid of latex smell, smoke smell, old house smell and more.

If the latex smell you need to get rid of is in a smaller area, say a jar or drawer, it will only take one container or a half inch or so in the case of a glass jar.

Baking Soda

Much better known than vinegar for its ability to absorb smells, baking soda is an inexpensive solution to getting rid of the smell of latex wherever it is. If it’s a room that has carpeting, sprinkle baking soda over the carpet and leave it overnight, then vacuum it up in the morning. If you have hardwood or tile or other hard surface floors in a room, use baking soda like vinegar. Put it into shallow containers, shut the door and leave it for a day.

Small areas can be sprinkled or deodorized to get rid of latex smell by using a small container of baking soda.

Newspaper

Surprisingly, common newspaper absorbs many smells, including latex. Crumple sheets of black and white printed newspaper and toss them all around. Newspaper works best in a closed environment, so again, close the door and leave it. Newspaper can take longer than either vinegar or baking soda, but it works well and can be cheaper than either. One drawback is that it may take quite a bit to get rid of the latex smell in a whole room.

If you have small items, put them in a jar along with some crumpled newspaper and it will get rid of the latex smell in about two days.

If the smell of latex isn’t overpowering, you can usually continue to use the rooms or items while waiting for these solutions to take effect.
