How to Get Rid of Maggots

There is nothing that makes us sick more than seeing the sight of a swarm of maggots in our household. Just how do you get rid of them? Here are some tips for you.

Breaking the Cycle

One good way to get rid of any maggots that you may have is to stop the problem at the source. That means kill the flies. A lot of household pesticides kill flies rather quickly and easily. However, they do not have a great effect on maggots. Also, you should keep your trash covered up. Get rid of anything that is rotten. If you have a garbage disposal, use it. It’s best to not throw any leftover food in your trash can.

Hot Water

The most effective way to get rid of maggots is to pour boiling water onto them. Some people have suggested that putting other things into the boiling water, such as bleach, will help. Once you have poured the water onto the maggots, and you are sure they are dead, you can just sweep them up. You can either throw them away in a tied off trash bag, or feed them to your chickens or fish if you have any.

Less Painful Death

Some people would argue that the maggots suffer a greal deal when the boiling water is poured onto them. If you are a person who just can not stand to see anything in pain, even a maggot, then putting them in the freezer is the way to go. You can sweep them up into a trash bag and tie it off. Then you place the bag into your freezer. This will cause the maggots to fall asleep and soon after they will die a less painful death.

Bug Sprays

The same bug sprays that can easily kill the parents are very ineffective on maggots. However, there are certain commercial preparation that are targeted for getting rid of maggots. But for every report that says products like these actually work, there’s another that says these products only seem to make them more active. Some people have suggested the use of carburetor cleaner, but if you use this there will be more of a mess to clean up and the maggots wont be any more dead then if you were to use boiling water.
