How to Get Rid of Nappy Hair

It does not matter if you are a male or a female, hair is very important. We go to great lengths to dye it, cut it and accessorize it. Straight hair is usually the style of choice because it is manageable and the styling is flexible. If you want to have straight hair there are some techniques you can use to learn how to get rid of nappy hair.

You must first decide if you want to straighten your hair permanently or temporarily. Although neither technique can alter your hair structure, a permanent straightening technique will last longer.

Permanent Straightening

The most common way to get rid of nappy hair is by using a cream relaxer on the hair. This is the more “permanent” way to straighten although the hair will revert in 6-8 weeks after application when the new growth begins to appear. New growth is the term used to refer to the unprocessed hair.

It takes some practice to learn how to apply a relaxer correctly. The hair needs to be parted into four sections. Use petroleum jelly to rub along the hairline. You will need to use plastic gloves and an applicator brush to apply the cream relaxer. Apply to the hair only and not the scalp.

  • Work one section at a time until the relaxer is on all the hair.
  • Once the relaxer has been applied, smooth it with your fingers and catch any spots you may have missed.
  • After 15-20 minutes rinse the relaxer from the hair and follow up with shampoo and conditioner.

Temporary Straightening

If you only want to get rid of nappy hair for a special occasion, consider a temporary solution:

  • You will need to start by shampooing and conditioning the hair.
  • After washing and towel drying the hair, de-tangle the hair with a wide tooth comb. Since nappy hair is more tangled when wet, take care to comb the hair from end to root to decrease breakage.
  • Apply a hair straightening oil or lotion to the hair and blow dry with a comb attachment.

Texturizers

If you are looking to get rid of nappy hair but keep your curl pattern, a texturizer is a great alternative. A texturizer is similar to a relaxer except it is left on for a shorter period of time.

Cut It Off!

If you are really looking to end the nappy nightmare on your head, cut it all off! Sure it will grow back but you will have a few months before you have to deal with it again and you reduce the risk of using chemicals or burning your hair and scalp.

Having straight hair is something that is desire by people who were not born with it. You may not have straight hair naturally but you can learn how to get rid of nappy hair.
