How to Get Rid of Scars

Be it a scar from a surgery or one caused due to acne, scars (old & new) can’t be overcome in a day. But that doesn’t mean it is impossible to get rid of scars. With proper treatment, it is viable by all means. Scar sheets, creams and ointments are usually preferred practical means of removing scars, and for all those who have lots of money, there are a lot of surgical methods that can whiff away any kind of scar that threatens your looks.

Seeing a Dermatologist

It is always advisable to go to a dermatologist for any scar removal purpose as they know the latest techniques and methods of removing scars. It is even more beneficial because they can suggest a good surgeon, in case you want to go in for an operation for scar removal. But doctors always advise treatments that do not compromise on the looks of the patients.

Silicone scar sheets

Scar sheets ought to be in use at least for a minimum of 8 weeks. They should be worn for half a day at least, with a change of sheet every 4 days. In case the scars don’t go away in a space of 10 weeks, it is possible that they are going to take a while before they disappear. Sloughing of old skin and replacement by new skin obviously takes some time.

Mederma gel

Mederma gel uses onion extract that is scentless, which can help in getting rid of scars. Generally, Mederma is used in the treatment of scars caused due to acne. These gels are extremely effective and they make the scar disappear in some months. It does take a lot of time to show its effect, but it is better this way than having to live with the scar all your life.

Skin treatment using Alpha Hydroxy’s

Its paramount use is as a facial skin care product. But pertaining to the reason that alpha hydroxys acid flakes off any kind of skin, it can be used to remove scars in other places as well. The most important point to be kept in mind while using anti-scar creams and other skin care products, is that all these treatments are extremely effective, but do take some time to prove to be effective. This is because, the dermal layer that forms the scar, is made up of very thick fibroblasts that take time to go away.

Surgical Removal of Scars

Just because the scar removal process is time consuming, you don’t have to gasp in despair. There are many other methods by which scars can be removed which include:

  • Dermabrasion
  • Laser surgery
  • Chemical peels

Dermabrasion is a process of scraping off the fibrous layer from the skin. Laser surgery also works in a similar manner, but there is only a small difference. In this method, a high intensity light beam is applied on the scar. This causes the skin to exfoliate and a new dermal layer arises in place of the scar. Chemical peels also work similarly ensuring that new skin replaces the old fibrous scar tissues that hamper your good looks.

There are always risks associated with any surgical operations. However experienced and talented a surgeon is, the place where the scar was present will not improve a lot. In certain cases, the skin around the scar might develop a black color and you might also be prone to various infections that may go unnoticed. So, it is a good idea to talk to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, before you decide to have your scars removed surgically.
